Sharpe lessons in Women's Pipe

PyeongChang 2018

Olympic news: Cassie Sharpe blows minds in Women’s Ski Pipe

Canada’s Cassie Sharpe was head and shoulders above the competition earlier today as she nailed Gold in the Olympic Women’s Pipe event with a blinding run that earned 95.80 and the Olympic title. Closest rival, Marie Martinod of France fell in a promising final run so relied on her previous 92.60 for Silver with America’s Brita Sigourney claiming Bronze in her third and final run with a 91.60.

In truth (and with the greatest respect to all competing), it was almost like watching two finals as the top four skiers really were in a class of their own – particularly in terms of terms of amplitude – a fact not lost on the judges and reflected in the final scores.

Special mention to Marie Martinod of our home resort this season, La Plagne for earning an impressive Silver. The 33 year old, who has announced her retirement following these Olympics, put down improving first and second runs but was unfortunately unable to improve her score, falling in the third. Also Rowan Cheshire of the UK for her 7th place – particularly given her epic struggle to return to the sport after her horrific crash in Sochi.

Defending Olympic Champion, Maddie Bowman of Team USA couldn’t bring the goods this time out and ended 11th.

The level of riding in the Pipe event was insane – a great testament to the speed of progression in the Women’s side of the sport today.
