North Korea today confirmed it intends sending athletes to the PyeongChang Olympics next month. In a seeming melting of hostilities, North Korean officials claimed their ballistic missiles are not intended to threaten their neighbours in the South – nor China or Russia – but are intended purely to counter the United States. This position seems to have been enough to barter a deal for the North Koreans to attend.
The PyeongChang Games – now dubbed the ‘Friendly Games’ – start next month on February 9th, just some 50 miles from the border with the North. For a time, some nations had talked of not sending teams, deeming the risk of aggressive action by the North too severe.
