PyeongChang 2018Olympic news: Gisin storms to Gold while Vonn fails to finish
Michelle Gisin took Gold in the Women’s Combined earlier today while a disappointed Lindsey Vonn failed to finish this, her final Olympic race. Gisin, 24 from Switzerland, won in 2:20.90 seconds – with American Mikaela Shiffrin, 0.97secs behind in Silver. She adds that medal to the Gold she took earlier in the Slalom event. Switzerland’s Wendy Holdener landed Bronze which she adds to the Silver she won in the slalom. Ragnhild Mowinckel of Norway narrowly missed out on a third medal of these Games, coming 4th some 0.29secs behind Holdener.
However, it was Vonn, 33, who ended up the subject of most of the headlines this morning. She had the fastest time in the downhill which meant she would go last in the slalom but ended up with a DNF. It was a disappointing end to the Olympic career of one of the most successful Alpine racers ever – male or female. As she bowed out of what must surely be her last Olympics Vonn commented, “It’s been a great ride. I’ll take a lot of great memories with me.
“After a certain amount of injuries you just can’t get back to the level you were at. I’m not where I used to be and I never will be, and that’s probably the hardest thing for me to take.”
